The Challenge
ICA Supermarket Blengård, one of the busiest ICA stores in eastern Norway, was struggling with its previous reverse vending operation. Customer queues at the deposit return area were causing frustration, machine downtime was frequent and collection rates were not reaching the levels that management wanted.
The Solution
TOMRA’s team conducted a site survey, analysed transaction data from the existing machines and proposed replacing the legacy installation with two TOMRA R2 units — TOMRA’s flagship high-capacity reverse vending machine — complemented by TOMRA Connect for real-time operational monitoring.
The installation was completed over a single weekend to minimise disruption to store trading. TOMRA’s service team trained store staff on the TOMRA Connect dashboard and set up automated alerts for fill levels and error conditions.
The Results
Within three months of installation, ICA Supermarket Blengård had achieved a 97% return rate for containers sold in the store — one of the highest in the Norwegian DRS network. Machine downtime fell by 78% compared to the previous installation. Consumer satisfaction scores for the recycling area improved significantly in the store’s quarterly customer survey.
